List of Top Music Record Labels in Nigeria (2019)

Stumbled upon the list of top record labels in Nigeria on Nairaland.com but arranged them myself according to their popularity.

Below are top record labels that are most popular in Nigeria and owned by popular Nigerian artist in the musical industry.

1. Mavin Records

Termed as the hottest Label in the country at the moment. Mavin Records is a revamped record label founded by recording artist and Producer Micheal Collins Ajereh popularly known as Don-Jazzy.

The Label’s inception came to fruition following the closure of now defunct Mo’Hits Records, a record label owned by the afromentioned poducer and D’banj.

The label is home to recording artistes such as Tiwa Savage, Dr Sid, D’Prince, Di’ja, Reekado Banks and Korede Bello.

The label also houses a roaster of producers such as Jazzy himself, Altims and Baby Fresh.

Wande coal was formerly signed to the Label.

As a matter of fact, Mavin records has the biggest single/music by a Label which is 

Dorrobucci.

2. Y.B.N.L (Yahoo Boy No Laptop)

Y.B.N.L is one of the hottest and biggest record label in Nigeria at the moment. The fast rising label was founded by Olamide Adedeji popularly known as Olamide a.k.a Badoo.

The Label is home to some of the fast rising act in Nigeria, with the likes of Lil-Kesh, Viktor, and the newly signed duo, Xino and Chinko Ekun. And not forgeting Olamide’s newly born son, Maximilliano Batifeori Adedeji.

But one thing I discoverd is that the Label is lacking in management and Olamide needs to step up his game in evolving the label into a standardize one.

3. Square Records

Founded by the duo of Peter and Paul Okoye, popularly known as P_square. The label was founded in 2005 prior to the release of their sophomore album, ‘Get Squared’.

Mr May D was the only artiste formerly signed to the label, they parted ways due to some irreconcilable difference. And currently, there is no artiste sign to the label. But that doesn’t take away the fact that it is one of the biggest label in Nigeria due to the successful carrer of the artistes cum owners of the Label.

4. Chocolate City

Chocolate City was founded in 2005 by Lawyer Audu Maikori along with Paul Okeugo and Yahaya Maikori.

Generally regarded as one of the most biggest and most successful urban record labels in Africa. Chocolate City Music operates as a subsidiary of Chocolate City group.

Ome of the biggest entertainment conglomerates in Africa. Other arms of the group are Chocolate City Distribution, Chocolate City events and Chocolate City Media.

The Label is home to recording artistes like MI, Femi Kuti, Ice Prince,Jesse jags, Dj Caise, Pryse, Nosa, Victoria Kimani, Dice, Ailes and Koker. Artistes formerly signed to the label include Jeremiah Gyang and Brymo.

MI is currently sitting as vice president and is rumored to be the next president when Maikori steps down.

Chocolate City was the first Nigerian music company to attain a global music award and recognition by the British Council in 2007, International Young Music Entrepreneur of the year (IYMEY) 2007, and they bagged City People award for best record label in 2013 among others.

5. Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E)

The Label was founded by Banky W and Segun Demurin. And it is home to recording artistes such as Wellington himself, Shaydee, Niyola and the delectable Dj Xclusive who coupled as the Official Dj of the Label.

On June 10, 2012, the Label released its first compilation album, Empire Mates State of Mind.

Artiste formely signed to the label were Wizkid and Skales.

Skales left due to expiration of his contracts. And Wizkid left the label following the release of his second studio album and expiration of his 5 year contracts, but that doesn’t take away the fact that the Record Label is one of the biggest in the country at the moment.

6. Made Men Music Group (M.M.M.G):

Triple M-G as it popularly called, was founded by the duo of Iyanya Mbuk a.k.a Iyanya and his manager, Ubi Franklin. It houses artiste like Tekno, Emma Nyra, Selebobo, and Baci.

The label already has an album to its name, titled ‘The Evolution’.

Iyanya, being the lead act is one of the A-list artiste in Nigeria while the trio of Tekno, Emma Nyra and Selebobo have taken the label a step further into success with their music and productions.

7. Capital Hill

Capital Hill is a renowned record label in Nigeria founded by arguably the best director in Nigeria, Clarence Peters. He is partnered by ‘oga boss’ himself, illbliss, with his Gorretti Company. It houses artiste like Tha suspect, Chidinma, Illbliss and Ayoola.

The artiste formely signed to the label was sensational female rapper, Kel. But parted ways with the Label when a misunderstanding arouse between she and Peters.

All the act on this label are force to reckon with in the industry, and the artiste leading the fore-front of the label is non other than Chidinma.

Rapper CDQ has been severely slammed by fans who didn't find his comment about Teddy A and Bambam funny.

Bbnaija reality stars, Teddy A and Bambam recently held their white wedding ceremony in Dubai, which was a star studded event. Beautiful pictures from the event has been on major social media platforms for days now.

Teddy A shared a photo of himself and his beautiful wife, Bambam on his Instagram page.

He wrote:

"Riding till the wheels fall off".

In the comment section, rapper CDQ wrote that Bambam is really a lucky girl to marry a very handsome guy. He went further to say he thought Teddy A would marry from the Kardashian family considering his swag.

“Kai but this geh lucky sha. Me wey I dey think say na Kardashian’s family my guy go marry with all the swags,” he wrote.

A lot of Teddy A and Bambam's fans didn't find his comment funny, he was seriously criticised. When the criticism became too much to bear, CDQ commented that he was only joking.

“problems too much for dis country so I understand a lot are frustrated. Mabinu, I was only joking louder as nigga to nigga. No disrespect Mami ❤” he wrote.

Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg, one of the wealthiest people in the world, just said he agrees with socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) that billionaires should not exist.

Sanders last month brazenly told The New York Times, “I don’t think that billionaires should exist.”

The senator — still a 2020 candidate for the Democratic nomination for president — went on to say he has plans for a wealth tax and what he’s calling a national wealth registry.

“This proposal does not eliminate billionaires, but it eliminates a lot of the wealth that billionaires have, and I think that’s exactly what we should be doing,” Sanders insited.

As for Zuckerberg, who is worth — oh, about $69 billion or so — he was asked about Sanders’ comments during a Q&A session with employees on Thursday.

“On some level, no one deserves to have that much money,” Zuckerberg said of billionaires, as The New York Post and others reported of his remarks.

“I think if you do something that’s good, you get rewarded.”

344-year-old tortoise, Alagba dies in Ogbomosho

344-year-old tortoise in the traditional ruler of Ogbomoso’s palace, popularly known as ‘Alagba’, has passed away. (PMNews)

The 344-year-old tortoise in the traditional ruler of Ogbomoso’s palace, popularly known as ‘Alagba’, has passed on.

Mr Toyin Ajamu, the Private Secretary to Oba Jimoh Oyewunmi, Soun of Ogbomoso, confirmed this to newsmen on Thursday in Ogbomoso.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the dead tortoise attracted several visitors both from Nigeria and abroad to the palace.

Ajamu said that the tortoise, whom he described as the oldest in Africa, died on Thursday after a brief illness.

He said the tortoise would be greatly missed not only by the palace household but everyone who came in contact with it during its lifetime.

“Alagba lived in the palace for centuries. The tortoise played host to many monarchs in Ogbomoso in the past. Alagba became popular because Oba Oladunni Oyewumi, Soun of Ogbomosoland, used his personal resources to cater for her well being.

“The tortoise had two staff members of the palace, dedicated to her. They provide food, health support and other logistics, so as to make sure she gets the best treatment.

”Often times, Kabiyesi shares great moments with Alagba.

“On a daily basis, Alagba, had tourists visiting her from different part of the world.

”The palace household, Ogbomoso community and stakeholders in the tourism sector are mourning Alagba’s passage,” he said.

Ajamu explained that plans are underway to preserve Alagba’s body for historical records.

Nigerian singer, Burna Boy is not having the best of the day, as fire recently destroyed one of his most valuable property.

10 months after buying it as an Xmas gift for himself, fire has damaged the singer Range Rover Autobiography.

The vehicle caught fire, this morning, along the Lekki-Epe expressway, but the singer wasn’t in it when the incident occurred.

The fire was however quenched by some Good Samaritans before it could wreak havoc.

#BBNaija: Dino Melaye speaks on giving Tacha N30 million

The Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Dino Melaye, has reacted to report that he promised to give disqualified Big Brother Naija housemate, Tacha 30 million Naira.

Reports had on a Saturday emerged that the lawmaker made the pledge after Tacha’s disqualification yesterday on his Twitter handle.

Biggie, who quoted an article from the Big Brother’s rules, said ”You are guilty of physical assault and violence.”

He, therefore, disqualified Tacha from the reality show and issued two strikes to Mercy.

Coming out of the Big Brother House disqualified was never my intention. Unfortunately, my weakness played against my strength and cut short what should have been a grand ending, with or without the prize.
I sincerely apologize for every action on my part that led to this point and I take full responsibility for it all.
I am an adult and ought to be in control of my emotions, but I’m human and I failed time and again. Please forgive me. I sincerely wanted to make it, at least to the 99th day.
The fight to be seen and heard takes its toll on everyone of us irrespective of where, when or how it comes. What counts is what we make out of a seemingly ugly situation.

Nigeria police rescue more than 300 boys and men held in 'dehumanizing conditions'

Lagos, Nigeria (CNN) — Nigerian police rescued more than 300 people - mostly children -- held in "dehumanizing conditions" during a raid on a school on Thursday, City of Kaduna police spokesman Yakubu Sabo told CNN.

The school owner told police he was running an Islamic school to reform the students, according to the police spokesman. However, police said there is no evidence the school was actually being used as a religious facility.

The group of men and boys, some as young as 13, were freed after police learned children were being held in chains at a school in the northern city of Kaduna, Sabo said. Kaduna is 150 kilometers (about 93 miles) north of Nigeria's capital, Abuja.

Six teachers and the school owner were detained and questioned by police. CNN called the school seeking comment but nobody answered the phone.

Sabo said some of the men were chained and hoarded in a very confined space, adding that the men "were not hostile" and "there is no reason why they should have been held in such a place."

Sign at the school from which police freed 300 people.

Some of the detainees, especially children, had scars on their bodies and told the police they had been sexually abused in the school, according to the spokesman.

"They had scars and some marks of torture and violence on them. They were pleading they should be taken out of the place and they have been evacuated from that facility," Sabo said.

Police are working with state authorities to reunite the men and boys with their families.

Some of the detainees, who were from neighboring countries, including Burkina Faso and Mali, said they were brought to the school by their parents.

It’s the end of the road for Tacha after she was disqualified from the big brother reality tv show. This was a sequel to the brouhaha in the Big Brother House earlier today.

Recall that Mercy and Tacha engaged in an altercation earlier today – videos of the duo have been making rounds on social media as fans and viewers of the show pondered the fates of both housemates following their brawl.

According to section 15 of the Big Brother Rule Book, physical altercation are not allowed.

Mercy was issued two strikes from Big Brother.
